Dear Colleagues professionally researching in the field of computer networks, to your attention is the first electronic edition of "The Network Journal". The theory and practice in networking and computer systems.

There is no necessity to explain and give examples of the intensive development of computer networks, but it is necessary to pay your attention to the circumstances at which all substantiations at creation and modernizations computer systems are based, as a rule, on empirical knowledge which is saved up by developers during construction and operation of computer systems.

Computer systems represents a complex object which is in a stage of development and is characterized by plenty of parameters and dependences required to overcome many difficulties for creation of a general computer systems theory which should include in the structure, complex interconnected mathematical models.

To achieve the objective in view -construction of a general computer systems theory- can be as a result of only joint efforts by mathematicians on development and perfection of mathematical models and experts in generalizing experimental researches to reveal the new laws and reception of required characteristics and parameters of computer systems. "The Network Journal" editors contribute to the achievement of this purpose.

Collective efforts in studying the results published in the magazine and the preparation for the publication of own results are recommended so that it's possible to formulate principles of interaction of our Colleagues and the editors.

Clearly, that first edition bases on efforts of a limited number of researchers and does not bring to your attention a full spectrum of worthy to be published in "The Network Journal" The full index of headings the magazine will develop in due course. However, in this edition we shall try to define the basic directions.

"The Network Journal" is an application magazine then basically the headings should be fixed:

  • Basic components of computer systems,
  • their formalized description,
  • their mathematical models,
  • design procedures of required characteristics.

As for basic components in computer systems it is necessary to attribute the following:

  • Computer systems structure,
  • Computer systems topology,
  • Computer systems liaison channels,
  • Computer systems units,
  • Network databases,
  • Network reports and process functioning.

The formalized description of computer systems components includes: the description of parameters, characteristics and criteria of efficiency.

Mathematical models contain:

- Necessary mathematical ratios - in solving tasks in analysis,

- Criterion function and restrictions in solving tasks in optimization,

- Symbolical records in the chosen language during imitation modeling.

Methods of solving the required characteristics provided there's the presence of the necessary ratio and algorithm sequence of computing operations. The basic computer systems characteristics relate to: computer system structure, computer systems productivity, speed of delivery of messages, time of reaction in computer systems, time of processing in a network database, intensity of service messages in units computer systems, reliability of computer systems , information security in computer systems, survivability of computer systems, cost and economic efficiency of computer systems.

During designing it is necessary for the developed computer system:

  • to define or set functions,
  • to define or set the structure of supply of information ,
  • to define or set the required parameters of functions ,
  • to choose the structure ,
  • to choose the hardware structure ,
  • to choose software structure,
  • to choose the effective network organization of supply of information,
  • to define the estimations of productivity,
  • to find, at what values of varied parameters (structural, apparatus, programs, organizations)of the developed computer system most effectively carries out the given requirements.

The preparatory design stage provides research and generalization of characteristics of hardware and program realizations of components of computer systems which together with the set standardized characteristics of traffic are the necessary initial data for designing computer systems, effectively carrying out the given functions of benefiting the users.

It is necessary to develop the mathematical models strictly describing functional interrelations of parameters, methods of construction of such models and methods of practical use of these models for the successful decision of the listed complex problems of designing computer systems. Now developers of technical and software give for the products only the data concerning their characteristics. However, for designing computer sytems it is necessary to know their network characteristics for which process of accumulation, generalizations and revealings of laws only still begins for all components of a network.

"The Network journal" encourages the intensification of exchange of scientific information on such sections as:

    • Models and methods of choosing of the computer system structure,
    • Models and methods for basing hardware component choice of computer systems,
    • Models and methods for basing software component choice of computer systems,
    • Models and methods for analysing the functioning of data transmission channels and networks,
    • Models and methods for network organization of information supply,
    • Models and methods for the organization of computer system control,
    • Models and methods for determining the perfomance of computer systems,
    • Models and methods for determining the quality of network operation,
    • Research methods of network characteristics in computer systems,
    • Models and methods for the estimation of the reliability of computer systems,
    • Research methods of network traffic characteristics in computer systems,
    • Models and methods for optimizing network parameters when designing computer systems,
    • Experience in usage and exploiting computer systems,
    • Methods and means of securing data in computer systems,
    • Models of durability in computer systems,
    • Economical models for computer systems.

The first edition of the electronic magazine " The Network Journal" is a first step of enthusiasts on a way of practically realizing tasks in view.

The publications included in the" The Network Journal" №1, reflects the scientific results which are achieved in new century by the scientific groups of professor Klimanova V.P. and of professor Abrosimova L.I., which have operatively presented the results and consequently the contents of this edition covers only a part of the declared directions of the magazine.

In the section "Models and methods for analyzing the functioning of channels and networks of data transmission " has an article MATHEMATICAL MODELS FOR THE DISTRIBUTION OF LOAD IN A NETWORK OF LOCAL DATA EXCHANGE "Ellipsoid", in which the methodology of development of mathematical models in the functioning networks in a local data exchange of compound topology stated is published. The feature examined is the topology of their construction on the basis of several orthogonal groups in the parallel liaison channels using marker data transmission method for access. In points where monochannels crisscross, they incorporate by means of devices which carry out functions of "bridges" and which connect to the local data exchange network subscribers. The deduced analytical ratio allow to realize the program environment of modeling and to expect for examining class "ellipsoid" distributions of streams of the data in a network.

In the section " Models and methods for the estimation of computer systems productivity" has an article in which substantive provisions are stated on the theory of productivity of computer networks. In the article the system of interconnected definitions of productivity for components and the computer network as a whole, functioning in typical modes is formulated. The specification of quantitative parameters of computer systems architecture which are used for a conclusion of system of the analytical ratios is formulated, allowing us to expect quantitative estimations of computer system productivity in typical functioning modes.

In the section " Models and methods for the estimation of network quality function " the manua ANALYSIS AND DESIGNING OF COMPUTER NETWORKS in the course of "Computer Networks" is published and is devoted to an actual problem of maintenance of qualitative functioning of distribution of local computer networks in which practical tasks are solved by system integrators at designing computer networks and computer networks administration during their operation and modernization. Substantive provisions and are submitted a stage of a method of contours, its realizations for definition of characteristics WAN and Ring-LAN are considered. In the manual examples are used, control questions and the tasks providing fastening of a material are formulated. The manual is issued in MPEI circulation 300 copies in the year 2000 for the students training for the specialty № 552800 " Computer science and computer facilities " and for the specialty 22.01" Computers, complexes, systems and networks " and is practically inaccessible to other higher schools of learning.

In the section "Models and methods for an estimating the quality of designed computer systems" the article published is "design procedures of calculating the time characteristics of the Ethernet network .In the article, stages of processing the initial data for analysis are consistently stated, the basic theoretical positions and settlement ratios is shown, how it is possible to estimate various variants of modernization really functioning Local computer systems.

In section " Methods of researching the characteristics of a network traffic computer systems " the article published is, "the TECHNIQUES of ANALYSING the TRAFFIC of VIDEOCONFERENCES " in which the basic characteristics is influencing the quality service of videoconferences are defined, conditions, means and the basic stages and techniques of research and realization of video traffic are stated, the results not only show the serviceability of the technique, but also allowing to the use of these results to developers in designing computer networks.
